'
ring.... ring....' Went the phone.
I gently picked up the receiver of the phone and as always, in my most curteous tone of voice, I whispered "hello?"
It was an old friend of mine. Let us call him Harvey.
Well, Harvey says "Hey, did you know that I'm going to be in Los Angeles this weekend with your nephew for the Chidon?"
"Oh really?! Why, that's wonderful! Send my nephew regards, give him a big hug from me and tell him that his uncle wants him to drink lots of water in Cali, because I don't want him to dehydrate you know!" I was trying to be as polite as possible to my lucky friend Harvey. But inside of me, somewhere along the Chollol Hasmolli freeway, I was going "Hey jerk... enjoy Cali and don't rub it into me!"
But, then came Harvey's reason for calling... "I wanted to ask you, would you like to come to California with me and be a counselor for a bunch of the Chidon kids??"
"Seriously???"
"Yeah seriously. Give me a call soon and let me know. Mark (whose name is also by the way NOT Mark, but we're trying to keep his anonymity) said that if you can find a ticket to L.A. for under 300 bux American, then you're in."
Needless to say, I was excited. My Chavrusah wasn't though when he found out thirty seconds later.
I searched the internet thoroughly. But the cheapest ticket I was able to find was for 509$ American. And that was without tax. I was so ticked off. How could Harvey have played such a dirty trick on me?!
I was busy playing Solitaire on the computer a half hour later (I sometimes play solitaire on the computer, to take away stress. It doesn't really take away the actual stress, but at least it redirects the stress to the game that I'm playing and not to the issue that I have to deal with), when the phone rang.
This time I grabbed the phone and yelled "What do you want??"
"Hey"... It was Harvey.
I remained silent as I held back my tears, but I think he could hear a muffeled sob from his end of the line. I think that's what made him say his next few words. "I just looked online myself and I found a flight for you on Thursday to Cali. I don't know the exact itinerary yet, because I haven't actually bought the ticket, but I'll call you back in five minutes. Just wanted to make sure that it's okay with you all the details."
I coughed, swallowed and whispered yes to him, then hung up the phone. Once again, my hopes were up. I may after all be going!! YAAAAY!!!
Ten minutes later, the phone rings again. Hooray! Now I'm going to get all the information I need. Like how much suntan lotion I will need, how many bathing suits to pack, whether my hat and jacket are really neccessary... (You know, the usuals).
"Hello, what's up?" I said merrily.
"Yeah..."
"What do you mean
yeah??"
"Alright, here's what happened. We went back to the website to buy that cheap ticket, but it seems that it was already sold out by the time we came back, so we couldn't buy that ticket either."
I had to squeeze my pet lion Steve so tight, that his veins started popping out of his head. This was crazy I thought, as tears began forming at the edge of my eyes. I'm just going to spend the day sulking in bed and playing solitaire after this, I thought.
Harvey continued speaking... "But, I searched the internet like crazy, until I found the same deal on another website, and I bought it. The thing is, it's leaving on Wednesday and coming back on Monday. Is that okay with you??"
I couldn't speak I was so shocked, so Steve (my pet lion WHO TALKS!) finished off the conversation for me and told Harvey that it was great and that I will
Im Yirtzeh Hashem be there.
I hung up, smiled and finished my solitaire game.
So... I'm going to be in L.A. on Wednesday. Very exciting!! Not much more to write.
Oh! another funny thing that happened. Last night, I'm telling my older Shvester that I'm going to Cali for the Chidon. Before I can finish the sentence, she goes "Bravio! I knew you can do it. I always knew you were determined to learn all that Ramba"m and win the contest!!". I started laughing and explained to her that I hadn't actually studied anything. I was going to be a counselor for the kids who did the learning.
I think that the reason she right away changed the subject to New York sewer rats, was because she was embarrassed...
