In Mexico City and I have internet access

Thanks to this small, compact netbook that was just donated to our center, I have internet access even when I travel.
In honor of this years Chof Beis Shvat, I will be having an extremely busy day tomorrow... Beginning with minyan at 8:00am for a yohrtzeit, followed by a holocaust memorial event at the Mexican senate... Don't be too impressed with it... I'm not going to be meeting the President or anyone special (Although I will be taking like a thousand photos)
Then I finally secured an event with the owners of the mall that we use in Los Cabos for the CHabad House. Please say Tehillim for success in that meeting at 2pm MTL time.
At 2pm, the morning event continues at the Israeli Embassy in Mexico City.
At 6pm, there is a reception dinner with Rabbi Yona Metzger, chief Ashkenazic Rabbi of Israel.
On Friday, I have an important meeting at 11am and my flight back to Cabo is at 12:30pm... How will I make it? I'm going to check my bags in early morning and trust that Hashem will allow me to get to the airport with enough time for the flight... If not, I'll be here for Shabbos. boo hoo!!!
SHLICHUS!!!!
Anyways, I'm exhausted! Had a really rough day today. But G-d takes care of everyone and that's the awesome news.
Not much else to write... Being busy doesn't allow my mind to wander and come up with crazy ideas to blog about... I used to love it when I'd be bored all day and these insane thoughts would enter my mind, which I would in turn share with the crazy world around me.
But no more! Now I am busy and I don't think, which means that m'blawg is boooorrrinng!!
Signing out!!!
(Bashie, are you happy that I finally posted something??)

Another Zvi email and some more of my comments and additions

Harry Ashkenazi - Bad quality. He's too loud on the mike (and then he'll abruptly soften) and he keeps changing the pace. His twists are very nice and he has some good potential eith the control of the notes in my opinion. 3 stars.

Avi Ganz - The guy on the clarinet is AMAZING. Ganz himself is kinda lost in the other guys talent. Nonetheless, he has a sweet voice, but not strong enough. 4 stars.

Yisroel Amar - Beautiful voice, however he went stale at the complicated part (the part after shalalala) where he was off on all the notes. He did that TWICE! Still, he can be really good. 4 stars.

Akiva Shechter - What a beautiful voice! However, he also has that weakness with deciding when to keep his voice strong and when to soften it. He needs to learn to control it. He also looks awkward and nervous. 4 stars.

And for some more comments by... me.

Here is the Akiva Schechter that Zvi doesn't like. He just uploaded this video apparently. It's at the Marlin's game in Florida

And finally... Another great voice that I didn't even realize. I passed over it initially, thinking that it was silly... But the guy is fully on tune and sounds really nice... So is his song.

Shimon Atlas

I'm going to go ahead and give him a colorful 3 1/2...

Any comments?

Toichen... True love and other stuff.

BTW, the most toichen'dige film that I ever watched was the Lion King. Although not very Chassidish, I watched it as a child and the message still resonates inside of me. "Your Fadda' is in you!"

In other news...

Recently, a fellow from our community decided to abandon his marriage and run off with another woman whom he had met several months ago. I was asked to get involved and help out. The problem was that the wife of this fellow is not Jewish. He was intermarried. So I was stuck between telling our community member just how valuable and important it is the maintain and be committed to family, yet I also had to tell him that he wasn't allowed to be with his wife either, because she isn't Jewish!!

While I was talking to him, he told me that basically, over the last few years, he had fallen out of love with his wife and had found this alternative which keeps him happy... A new woman.

And that got me thinking on the following concept.

True love. Two things.
Love... Everyone knows what that is.
Truth... Hmmmm... Now where do I recognize that from?

Well, this afternoon I thought about it a bit and decided to share it with the world.

When we analyze "true love", there seems to be a slight difficulty with it.

"True love" by definition means that there is such a thing as "not-true love." There must be some form of love and attraction which is devoid of truth, hence, it is false. The false love is but a mirage. It is attraction without any substance or reality to it. Dissolving into nothing with time.

And so I think some more.

From all the fairy tales, it seems like true love comes with luck and it arrives in an instant...

The prince is prancing around, eagerly seeking his "true love"... The princess is nestled away in her castle, tormented by her curse, which can only be broken when she finds true love.

And then the movie reaches its climax... The handsome prince slays the dragon, finally meets the beautiful princess (who may or may not be a frog) and alas they have found each other. The story is over and all of the viewers go home to imagine and dream that they too will perhaps eventually encounter and chance upon their own true love.

Yet how wrong and mistaken the movie is from reality.

Let us embark on the journey of my mind and figure this thing out.

  • Question: How can love possibly be false? Isn't any feeling inside of me real? Nobody can delegitimize the things that my heart is attracted to and repulsed by. That's exclusively for me to decide and the feelings to me are as real as anything!!
  • Elaboration: If I love potato chips, then I have a 'true love' to potato chips... Same is with playing golf, doing laundry or getting married! How can someone dare challenge the feelings I have inside and label them as "not-true love!!"
  • Interesting: Apparently, this is where the world gets it right. The world defines 'true love' by how Chassidus defines 'truth'. In Chassidus, 'truth' is defined as something that will last forever.
  • Which means...: If there is something that will exist for only several years and will eventually fade away, then our Torah deems it 'false'... Neharot Hamechazvin, the false waters discussed in the Torah is a certain river which would dry up once every seven years. Because of this deficiency in its existence, it was therefore unable to purify certain individuals who needed purification. In other words, truth MUST be something that lasts forever and will never dissapear.
  • And so: The same is with True love. It must be a feeling of love that will remain throughout time. If love is eventually going to fade away, then it cannot be deemed true.
  • That's the first point to inhale...
  • Another point: Truth is also the fusion of opposites. When two opposites come together, they create truth! Indeed, our world is one where truth rings. For although our world is physical and false... But when we introduce holiness and spirituality into our universe, we have combined two opposing forces and created a brand new existence of truth.
  • More elaborate: Our Torah is truth, because it fuses the spiritual with the Physical... In Kabbala, there are three parts to the Kabbalistic tree. The right side (ChaCha'N), then there is the left side (BaGa'H) and finally the central line, which is the line of truth (Da'Ti'im). Why is the center the line of truth? Because it is the fusion of both opposite characters, emotions and intellectual capacities.
  • However: In order to achieve truth through combination, each opposite must be on the same wavelength... They must be able to be combined.
  • Which means: that if you combine a human with an animal, something that is a totally different creature, then you will never get truth between them. At the end of the day, they are two totally different entities that cannot possibly be combined in a healthy way... Man and Woman are two diametrically opposed creations, yet they both share the fact that they are humans... Thus, when they come together in marriage, they are forming a true bond.
  • But...: Like previously stated, if two people are on two different wavelengths, then they can never create a 'true' bond!
  • And therefore: Truth must be shared with someone who fully clicks... Both physically and spiritually. A Jew must marry another Jew in order to find True Love! Any other way, will make it impossible to achieve absolute truth in their love.
  • Yet: There must also be a fusion of the two opposites. If one of the parties in a relationship is not interested in investing the effort to perfect, nurture and develop the love between the two people, then truth cannot be felt... Because one must work very hard on encountering and uncovering the truth that lies at the heart of a healthy feeling of love.
  • And so in conclusion: True love can only be shared Jew to Jew... But it can be attained only through hard work. It's not an instantaneous feeling of love that automatically is true. In order to tap into truth, one must work hard... One must fuse two opposites into one, loving relationship!
And that's my rant... I'm so tired and need to go to sleep. I'm sure this post is going to look horrible tomorrow.

Another Zvi email...

Raphael Beniziri - His voice is waaaay too shaky. Remember how MBD used to use his low and shaky voice? it worked. But Raphael's doesn't work at all. Also he trails off at points. His voice softens and he seems unsure, or worse, terrified. I wouldn't want to watch him on stage. Imagine, all this WITH a studio recording. 2 stars.

Pinchus Stroh - You probably didn't wanna comment on him since I think you know him. His voice is good, but his breathing is atrocious. As is his keeping to a single beat. He'd be a good guy to have in kumzitz, but I don't think he's cut for his own CDs. 2 stars.

Hillel Braun - His voice is different and actually quite soothing. The song is also nice. And the harmonies are beautiful. I'm giving him 5 stars, but only because there's no middle ground between 4 and 5, where he belongs. His downside is no presence, as you put it. But I still think he's great.

Yechiel Schnitzler - Too nasal of a voice, and too bassey. He does go really high though and in that way reminds me kinda of Dedi lite. 3 stars.

More later.

And finally....

If you want to know who is pretty good on JewishStar. Here are some others to search.

Ilan Eckhardt - Can't quite hit all the notes. But a great guitarist and has some nice twists.
"2 stars"

Mendy Piamenta - Very Piamenta'ish. Don't like him personally, but very talented.
"3 stars"

Mendy Jacobson - Too nasal for me and I don't think he's got the charisma nor the charm to entertain.
"3 stars"

Shlomo Menkes - Crazy video and song... But his story is interesting. He's a Shliach in California who composed his song as a thank you to Hashem for finding a kidney donor for his daughter. His video is also wacked and amazing.
"2 stars"

Daniel Joshua Gerlich - Not my style, but I can see he has talent and character.
"3 stars"

Motty Reizes - Horrible voice, but he composed a great song there.
"2 stars"

Moshe Borenstein - Weird tune to his song... But I like his voice and charisma.
"4 stars"

Mendy Katan - Too much studio work covering over his 'real' voice. He doesn't sing that good when live.
"2 stars"

Mordechai Levovitz - Not too shabby! Exciting! This should be a chance for him to break out. Maybe he should be from the winning finalists even.
"5 stars"

Raphael Beniziri - A bit shaky at times... If he's putting in a studio recording, then it's got to be perfect... If he sounded like this on raw video, I would give him 4 stars.
"3 stars"

Hillel Braun - Nice song. Not a very dynamic guy... But I like the song and voice.
"4 stars"

Yechiel Shnitzler - Don't like his voice, but he goes real high!
"3 stars"

Demian Kaus - Fantastic. Sweet voice. Maybe even a finalist
"5 stars"

Ariel Kempf - The best child junior contestant. Easy 5 stars. No tricky stuff. Smooth and sweet.
"5 stars"

Harry Askenazi - Sweet voice. I really like him, but his quality is muffled. He seems like a guy with a nice voice... Not a star!
"4 stars"

Akiva Shechter - Great voice, but a bit interesting in his presentation.
"4 stars"

Yisrael Amar - Nice... Nothing too special.
"3 stars"

Zev Wagowsky - This kid should definitely get very far. He's got an incredible voice!!! He's also filled with character.
"5 stars"

Nachas Baldinger - Also got a great voice and he's exciting to watch.
"5 stars"

Avi Ganz - Fantastic.
"4 stars"

And this last one's for Zvi

THIS GUY ABSOLUTELY ROX!!!!

A Jewish Star 5771... Zvi, this one's for you.

So, I've sort of been following the Jewish Star competition and here are the ones that I think should be in the winning group....

Meir Rivkin

Doesn't have the most spectacular voice and is missing in full vocal control... However he is talented musically, his song is wonderful and pleasant and they did a marvelous job on the video... You can also see that he's got confidence in public... I like that and expect Meir Rivkin to get far.

Shevach Tamir

Although I don't particularely like this kind of music (heavy metal)... But this guy is very talented and his voice is great... You can see he's got energy and I would like to see him on stage at the final event.

Avrami Cohen

This is by far my favorite Jewish Star submission. I hope this dude wins. I really do!
He's got such a unique voice and is the only one to take a classic song and make it 'his own'... Every else copies. He also is flawless on hitting the notes. He makes some nice twists too, even though I think he may have overdone them a bit.

But the best part of it all, is that the video and his voice are raw.
If someone spends hours in the studio and sounds great, who's to say that on stage performing live in front of everyone they won't sound like a goat?? This guy is a guaranteed winner. He gives you his voice as it is and it sounds good. Even Meir Rivkin and Tamir... I don't know if the voice I heard on the video is the same one that I'll get on stage... It will most probably be shakier and less controlled.

Nunu...

Those are the winners in my humble opinion.

About children. I honestly don't like most of them. Here is one that I think is great.

***

They need to seriously redesign this contest.

For next year, they MUST require audio submissions to be raw, unedited video.

No studio recordings. It covers over everything. I've spent time in studios and know exactly how the programs can make my cleaning lady Isidra sound golden.

They also should allow auditions to be a maximum of 30 seconds. "Nobody" is spending the 13 hours necessary to watch every second of all the submissions. 30 seconds to show everyone what you got and let them all decide.

And finally, I'm only watching the submissions on the Jewish Star's youtube channel. I got sick and tired of those 2 minute advertisements being shows before every submission. I think COLLIVE and the JewishStar's organizers are making a big mistake by putting the advertisers before the viewers entertainment.

And that's my rant.
